ZAGREB, Aug 2 (Hina) - A total of 5,178 active military personnel and 250 civil servants left the Croatian defence ministry from 30 November 2002 to 30 June 2003 as part of the reorganisation and downsizing of the armed
forces.

November 2002 to 30 June 2003 as part of the reorganisation and

The figures were given in a government report in response to June's
query by an MP, Krunoslav Gasparic, regarding care for redundant
ministry staff.
A total of 2,714 active-duty personnel left the military due to
retirement. Another 595 left at their request, retaining their
right to severance pay.
The ministry's health commission declared 992 staff unfit for
active service. They are entitled to pension.
A total of 275 personnel qualified for old-age pension while 20 were
retired by decision of the Croatian President and Supreme Commander
and awarded privileged pension.
Ninety-three (93) have applied for termination of active service
for personal reasons.
A total of 250 civil servants and employees left the defence
ministry after receiving privileged severance pay.
After the reorganisation process, the ministry is expected to
reduce the current workforce of about 33,000 to 27,000.
