"This is the right moment for all of us to remember the historic days
of the struggle for the freedom of our homeland and its
independence, the days when bravery and resoluteness helped us in
the defence of the Croatian State," Mesic wrote in the message,
expressing gratitude to all who gave their lives for Croatia.
"We wanted and had to defend Croatia, and not any kind of Croatia,
but a Croatia that is home to free and equal people and citizens,
Croatia of prosperity and progress," Mesic's message read.
"We must also have enough strength to acknowledge what was not good,
we must muster prudence and courage to condemn what was evil," the
president said.
"We must build a better Croatia, as a country marked by legal and
social equality and a democracy which will be a recognised and a
respectable partner in international relations," he added.
The parliament's president, Zlatko Tomcic, also forwarded a
message on the occasion of the coming national holiday.
