ZAGREB, July 25 (Hina) - A parliamentary deputy of the opposition
Democratic Centre (DC), Vesna Skare Ozbolt, on Friday asked the
parliament's foreign affairs committee chairman, Zdravko Tomac, to
provide information on negotiations with Serbia-Montenegro on the
demarcation of border-lines and the solution of the status of
Sarengradska Ada, an islet in the Danube river in eastern Croatia.

The islet, covering some 10,000 square metres, is registered in
Croatia's land books, but soldiers of Serbia-Montenegro have been
deployed there since 1991. They do not allow local villagers to
visit the islet. Most people who have attempted to visit their lots
and gardens on the islet have been arrested.
In an incident a year ago, the Yugoslav army arrested 25 Sarengrad
villagers and Vukovar-Sirmium County Prefect Nikola Safer while
they were on a tour to Ada.
Protests of local inhabitants who have been waiting for the
settlement of the problem for years show the need for the issue of
Sarengradska Ada to be resolved as soon as possible. The latest
protest rally was staged on Thursday, gathering about 100 villagers
and local officials.
Although a joint border commission has been active for some time,
neither a wider public nor foreign affairs committee members have
been acquainted with its work and they have no information on the
course of the negotiations, Skare-Ozbolt wrote in a letter to
Tomac.
