In connection with announcements that Croatia might send its troops
to Iraq, they said in a statement the country should not enter
conflicts but consistently and constructively contribute to a
peaceful and just world order.
Attending the closed meeting were representatives of the Catholic
Church, the Evangelical Church, the Evangelist Church, the
Reformed Christian Church, the Baptist Church, the Islamic
community, and the Jewish community of Zagreb.
The representative of the Serb Orthodox Church, Zagreb-Ljubljana
metropolitan Jovan, sent a letter of apology and wished the
participants a successful meeting.
The dignitaries endorsed a Croatian Caritas initiative to give
workers in shops and other public institutions whose work is not
indispensable for the functioning of society one day off during the
week.
As for a proposal to introduce yoga in the educational system, the
church dignitaries said those interested in yoga were able to
practice it but that an individual's interest in and relevant
bodies' decisions on the matter must not be imposed to the wider
community against its will, read the statement.
The participants in the meeting hailed the pope's recent visit to
Croatia, saying it was visibly imbued with the ecumenical and
inter-religious spirit of cooperation. They also welcomed the
recent visit by Israeli President Moshe Katsav as well as all other
events which they said were conducive to the stabilisation of
Croatia's society and inter-religious understanding.
