After visiting the synagogue, he went to a museum in the company of
the leader of the local Jewish community, Sabrina Horovic.
The Dubrovnik synagogue, originating from the 16th century, is the
second oldest Jewish place of worship in Europe. It was severely
damaged in the Yugoslav army shelling of the town when it received a
direct hit to the roof. It was reconstructed thanks to a donation
from the United States and with the assistance of the Dubrovnik
Reconstruction Board.
On Saturday, the Israeli president is scheduled to meet the Mayor of
Dubrovnik, Dubravka Suica, after which he will go sightseeing.
On Sunday, Katsav and Croatian President Stjepan Mesic are due to
visit Jasenovac, the site of a World War Two concentration camp.
