Delivering his speech, the Israeli head of state also spoke about
the position of his country, and terrorism as the biggest problem it
is dealing with.
According to Katsav, Israel very much appreciates Croatian
partisans and their bravery while they fought for freedom and
against fascism in Croatia. Those anti-fascist fighters are a
credit to the people of Croatia and are an important national value
for the young generation, he told parliamentary deputies.
The friendship between Israel and Croatia is based on the
understanding of the troubles which a people encounters while
trying to set up its own state in peace with neighbours, the
parliament's vice president, Mato Arlovic, said in his speech
welcoming the top Israeli official.
Katsav said the uprising of Palestinians in Israel, who are
insisting on their own state, had been going on since September
2000. The terrorism which the Jewish state has been fighting
against for almost three years does not diminish the belief in a
peaceful solution, Katsav said.
According to him, despite a thousand days of brutal terrorism, the
Palestinians can accomplish additional historical achievements if
terrorism stops and political negotiations resume.
Under the resolute leadership of the United States, the whole world
must address the epidemic of the present times, namely
international terrorism, the Israeli president added.
