There are no more dreams of a greater Serbia, Croatia or Albania.
The final unification of Europe will open up borders, introduce the
same standards for all and consequently eliminate motives for wars,
Mesic said after the meeting.
The former Swedish prime minister has arrived in Zagreb to attend an
international conference on the integration of minorities in
southeast Europe and the Baltic countries.
The Swedish diplomat praised Mesic for the policies he had been
pursuing "consistently and courageously". He said that sometimes
it was hard for people abroad to realise how much determination and
courage was necessary to say certain things loud and clear in the
areas of southeast Europe affected by recent wars.
The two officials also discussed the position of the Croatian
people in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the issue of Kosovo and the
stabilisation of the region. They agreed that developments in
Serbia and Montenegro were encouraging, the statement said.
