ZAGREB, June 21 (Hina) - Croatia marks Day of Anti-Fascist Struggle and the 62nd anniversary of the establishment of the first anti-fascist unit in occupied Europe -- the First Sisak Partisan Squad -- on Sunday, June 22.

Delegations of the President, parliament, and anti-fascist
fighters will lay wreaths at several vaults and monuments to anti-
fascist fighters, including the monument to the First Sisak
Partisan Squad fighters in Brezovica wood near Sisak.
This squad was established on 22 June 1941 and inlcuded 77 fighters,
mostly Croats. The squad mainly fought in Croatia, with 38 soldiers
surviving the war.
The establishment of the Sisak squad marked the beginning of
organised anti-fascist fighting in Croatia in which more than
500,000 Croatian citizens actively participated, according to data
of the Alliance of Anti-Fascist Fighters and Anti-Fascists of
Croatia.
About 230,000 fighters from Croatia fought in National Liberation
Army units. Fifty-two brigades, 17 divisions, and five of 11 NOV
corps were formed on Croatian territory.
Since Croatia gained independence, Day of Anti-Fascist Struggle is
marked on June 22. Previously it used to be celebrated on July 27 as
Day of Croatian People's Uprising.
