ZAGREB, June 18 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on
Wednesday he did not expect the reply of the chief prosecutor of the
International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) to
his letter regarding General Ante Gotovina would be any different
than it was. He added that Gotovina's position was now
significantly different and that the case had gained momentum. #L#
"I knew that it was very difficult to change General Gotovina's
status of an indictee to one of a suspect, but his current position
is much more different," Mesic told reporters at a ceremony at
Zagreb's Sheraton hotel, at which the best students were granted
"Nacional" weekly scholarships, Croatian Radio reported.
Mesic said his involvement in the case had helped speed it up,
providing an opportunity to discuss all aspects of Gotovina's
defence.
He reiterated that he would meet Gotovina if he requested so.
