Speaking to the national television's central evening newscast on
Sunday, she recalled the new Asylum Act and the obligation to build
a reception centre for people seeking asylum in Croatia.
"The Asylum Act was passed last week. Under it, Croatia is bound to
build, not secretly but openly, a reception centre for asylum
seekers in Croatia," she said, adding such a facility was being
built on the location of a former barracks in Trstenik near Zagreb.
The new law goes into force on July 1, 2004, by which time the
Trstenik facility should be ready. The Asylum Act stipulates that
Croatia can accept 150 asylees per year.
The British daily The Observer said on Sunday Croatia was building a
secret reception centre for people seeking asylum in Great Britain
on the location of a former military base at Trstenik. The Home
Office immediately refuted the information.
