Croatia's position is better than that of the other countries in the
region but like them, Croatia has to work towards adopting and
implementing EU principles, laws, values, and practices, Simitis
told reporters after talks with Austrian chancellor Wolfgang
Schuessel.
Asked what countries in Southeast Europe could expect from an
upcoming EU summit in Salonika, Simitis said the current mechanisms
of cooperation would be enhanced at the conference. There will be
more funds, joint programmes, and the countries have to adopt and
enforce the EU's legal standards, he said.
The region's countries can join the Union but must first meet the
prerequisites, said Simitis.
