The organisers of the event are the Croatian Commission for the
UNESCO and the UNESCO Section with the Croatian Foreign Ministry in
cooperation with the HAZU medical science class. The conference has
attracted over 40 experts from Croatia and abroad.
At the opening of the conference, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic
reminded that the General Declaration on the Human Genome, Genetic
Heritage of Mankind and Human Rights was unanimously adopted at the
UNESCO General Assembly at its plenary session in November 1997.
The declaration established general ethical criteria for research
of the human genome and possible applications of any results
obtained with the aim of reconciling the freedom of research and
protection of humans from possible misuse.
