"The Action Plan for the Adriatic", the final document of the
conference called "The Adriatic - a Central European Sea under
Pressure", should enable an adequate protection of the sea
environment and reduce the negative effects on the preservation and
sustainable use of the Adriatic and its bio-diversity.
Funds may be secured through international financial programmes,
reporters were told.
The document was signed by the environmental protection ministers
of Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia-Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina,
Italy, and Greece.
The other document, a memorandum of consent on the Neretva River
delta, was signed by representatives of Croatia, Bosnia, Monaco,
and MEDWET, an initiative for the protection of Mediterranean
wetlands.
The aim of the memorandum is to promote Croatia-Bosnia cooperation
in the joint management of the Neretva delta and wetlands so that
they may be preserved and sustainably used. Under the memorandum,
Monaco will secure MEDWET funds from donors.
Croatia's Bozo Kovacevic said the Neretva delta would be declared a
protected area. He pointed to the importance of cooperating with
neighbouring Bosnia to protect the entire Neretva basin, a project
worth US$12 million.
Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy have agreed to draw up a joint
intervention plan in the event of ecological disasters in the
Adriatic.
Attending the Zadar news conference were ministers and deputy
ministers from Croatia, Bosnia's two entities, the Czech Republic,
Hungary, Macedonia, Serbia-Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, and
Monaco, as well as Prince Albert of Monaco.
