"This is a great honour and responsibility. Dialogue between the
two churches has been intensified at all levels and everything
points to the fact that this visit will come about in due time,"
Bigovic told a Belgrade daily, "Blic".
Blic was told that the Catholic faithful in the Belgrade diocese
wished that the pope visit Serbia and Montenegro. The possibility
of this visit occurring as soon as next year has not been excluded,
as Serbia and Montenegro President Svetozar Marovic said in Rome.
Marovic visited Italy and the Vatican several days ago, when he told
a Rome daily "La Stampa" that his meeting with the Pontiff "was
leading to the pope's visit to Belgrade", which would be one of the
more determined steps in the country's joining the European Union.
"We would like both sides to begin preparing for this event and the
pope told me he agreed with that," Marovic said.
