Closer cooperation of police with the community is necessary so law
enforcement officers could direct their efforts towards crime
prevention instead of only removing the consequences of criminal
acts as it has been the case so far.
These are highlights of the Croatian interior ministry's strategy
"Police in the Community" which was presented at the conference.
The strategy envisages so-called neighbourhood police officers
whose task would be to maintain security in the community by being
present when and where needed.
Zagreb police chief Ivan Babic said the goal of the strategy was to
raise public awareness about the need for crime prevention at the
local level and provide the public with the possibility to actively
participate in suppressing crime in their neighbourhoods.
In the next three days of the conference, 26 speakers from 36
European countries will be talking about their experiences in
police work in the community and achieving quality and efficiency
in preventing all forms of crime.
