ZAGREB, May 26 (Hina) - Legislation which must be in keeping with
the European Union's legislation will be adopted in urgent
parliamentary procedure. Due to the extent of the work, the
parliament is likely to hold special sessions during the summer, a
co-ordinating body of the ruling coalition's party benches and the
government's inner cabinet decided at a meeting on Monday. #L#
The head of the parliamentary majority, Mato Arlovic, told
reporters that the adjustment of domestic legislation to the EU's
would be discussed soon at a meeting of all party whips.
The final deadline for the adoption of some 50 laws which are to be
in accordance with the EU legislation is mid-October. The adoption
of said laws creates conditions for the adjustment of domestic
legislation to the EU's - a task which should be completed by the end
of October - as well as for answering questions forwarded by the
European Commission. Around early November Croatia would send the
EC a complete report so that the EC could possibly start discussing
its application for membership in mid-December.
Elections will be held once these issues are solved - either this
autumn or in the early spring of 2004 - and there are no changes as
regards that issue, Arlovic said.
He confirmed that the parliament expected the first several
thousand questions to arrive in June. This issue was not discussed
in detail today, Arlovic said, adding that participants in the
meeting supported the government's plan to answer the questions as
soon as possible, by the end of October at the latest.
