ZAGREB, May 14 (Hina) - Although they refused a proposal that the parliament abandon the new electronic voting system until it was adjusted to the parliament's Rule Book, MPs in the Croatian parliament decided not to use the new
voting system on Wednesday.

By raising their hands, the parliamentary majority refused the
proposal by Miroslav Rozic of the Croatian Party of Rights/Croatian
Christian Democratic Union, however, contrary to previous
announcements, Sabor President Zlatko Tomcic decided that the
parliament would not use the new voting system today and called on
the Committee on the Constitution and Rule Book to urgently adjust
the system to the Rule Book.
Rozic claimed that electronic voting was mentioned only as a
possibility in the Rule Book and that it could be abused, which he
said had already happened in some parliaments. He therefore called
for abandoning the new voting system, which was to be put into
operation today.
After last week's unsuccessful testing of the system, Siemens
company this weekend removed technical problems and parliament
officials believe the system will start operating today.
Tomcic confirmed that the Rule Book and the new voting system needed
adjustment, but that there were no major problems which could make
the parliament abandon the new system.
The agenda of the 32nd parliamentary sitting includes nine bills
which are to be adjusted to the EU legislation. They refer to
consumer protection, wine, foreign currency transactions, asylum,
foreigners, protection of nature, farming register, the
confidentiality of personal data and market competition.
Tomcic called on parliament's working bodies and government to step
up their work and discuss the bills so as to avoid extraordinary
parliamentary summer sessions.
