The parliament continued its work with a discussion on four bills
covering the health sector which refer to doctors, dentists, nurses
and activities and employees in the medical-biochemist area.
Introducing the government-sponsored bills, Health Minister Andro
Vlahusic said the new laws would provide better conditions for the
work of doctors.
The bill on doctors stipulates greater authority of the Croatian
chamber of doctors, as an expert organisation, in regulating
relations among doctors and their relations with patients and
control over doctors' work.
According to Vlahusic, there are some 13,000 doctors who are the
chamber's members, and another 10,618 doctors are employed in
health institutions. The Croatian Medical Association will be a
voluntary organisation, competent for the advancement of the
doctor's profession.
The minister added that Croatia had 3,171 dentists, and thus the
ratio of one dentist to 1,100 citizens was sufficient for covering
the needs of patients, according to Vlahusic.
The bill on the medical-biochemical field regulates activities of a
total of 182 Croatian medical laboratories.
MPs were also informed about the bill on nurses. In Croatia there
are 25,913 employed nurses and the bill stipulates the set-up of
their association which will be in charge of supervision of nurses'
work and their professional promotion.
The minister told MPs that a bill on patients' rights could soon be
expected on the agenda.
