During debate, MPs pointed out the exceptional significance of the
Institute which was founded in October 1950. They recalled the
Institute's reputation and its uniqueness in the scientific,
cultural and educational life of Croatia.
Also today, the opposition harshly criticised a bill on the
validation and equivalency of foreign diplomas and certificates,
claiming it was not in line with contemporary European standards
and should be returned to the relevant committee for expert fine-
tuning.
Objections were also heard from parliament's education committee,
which said the bill did not reflect the main intention of the Lisbon
Convention on the recognition of tertiary qualifications in
Europe. The Convention seeks a simpler and speedier procedure in
recognising tertiary qualifications attained abroad.
The Sabor will vote on these bills during the continuation of its
32nd sitting as early as Wednesday.
