ZAGREB, May 12 (Hina) - National minorities' representatives have suggested around 3,600 candidates for minority councils and representatives, which is only half of the number of people they have the right to nominate in line with the principle of proportional representation in counties, towns and municipalities, i.e. 6,700.
ZAGREB, May 12 (Hina) - National minorities' representatives have suggested around 3,600 candidates for minority councils and representatives, which is only half of the number of people they have the right to nominate in line with the principle of proportional representation in counties, towns and municipalities, i.e. 6,700. #L# This is unofficial information released by the State Electoral Commission according to the number of valid candidacies submitted by national minority associations or a by certain number of voters. Candidates have been suggested in all Croatian counties, with the most in Osijek-Baranja County -- 685 -- and only one in Krapina- Zagorje County. The ballot, which will take place on May 18, will be monitored by the GONG non-governmental organisation with 21 mobile teams at several polling stations. Members of national minorities, who make up for 1.5 percent of the population in units of local and regional self-government, have the right to elect 25 council members in counties, 15 members in towns and 10 members in municipalities. The right to elect council members is given to national minorities whose members number at least 500 in a county or 200 in a town or municipality.
