ZAGREB, May 3 (Hina) - Employees of almost all Croatian media joined in a five-minute stoppage between 11:55 and 12:00 hours on Saturday to mark World Press Freedom Day. #L# The action, called "Five Minutes of Thunderous Silence", was a complete success, the Croatian Journalists Union (SNH) stated. Many local radio stations, Croatian Radio and entire radio networks throughout the country joined in the protest, the union said. Along with agency and TV reporters, journalists working in dailies participated in the symbolic protest as well. All the media aired a declaration by the SNH pointing to the need to define the status of Croatian journalists and media employees. The action was also joined by journalists and media workers from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, and Macedonia, and was supported by the International Federation of Journalists. The union seeks support for the signing of a collective agreement regulating minimal social, working and professional rights for journalists and workers in the media on the national and local levels and media workers without permanent work contracts, who the union says work full-time for years without regular pay and pension and health insurance contributions. Another purpose of the action was to warn about the need to secure journalistic independence and protection of journalists against professionally unfounded interventions, the declaration notes.
