On the second day of his official visit to Latvia, Croatia's head of
state visited the Liepaja port and free zone.
Mesic said he advocated the brave opening of free zones in Croatia
which was why he would bring to Croatia Latvia's law verified by the
European Union. He added that the fear of free zones existed in some
circles in Croatia, primarily because of smuggling. According to
him, the problem should be solved by control mechanisms.
Croatian European Integration Minister Neven Mimica talked about
concrete forms of cooperation with local officials. Croatian
experts will arrive in Liepaja to gain an insight into Latvia's
negotiations with Brussels on free zones.
The Croatian delegation in Liepaja also visited a regional centre
specialised in under-sea mine removal.
Mesic encouraged the idea of opening such a centre in Croatia which
neighbouring countries would also benefit from.
The Croatian president will attend the presentation of Croatia's
tourism in Riga on Saturday evening. The event is organised by the
Croatian National Tourist Board.
