After the sufficient number of MPs arrived in the Sabor hall to
ensure a necessary quorum, the parliament approved a bill, moved by
the Croatian People's Party (HNS) on the direct election of mayors
of municipalities and towns and county prefects. The bill was in the
first reading. Another bill of the HNS referring to local and
regional self-rule was endorsed, too.
Bills, moved by the Social Liberals (HSLS) on the identification
number and the identity card were not approved. Sabor entrusted the
government with a task to draw up a new system of the identification
number until 1 June.
MPs did not give the green light to a bill on the protection of
employees who issue information of public interest, the so-called
whistle-blowers, which was in the first reading, but the parliament
decided to treat yesterday's first reading of this bill as an
initial debate.
