Kastelan's report was unanimously supported by the Academy's
members who convened at Thursday evening's assembly.
One of the most important events in the HAZU's international
cooperation in 2002 was the admission of the Croatian Academy into
the European Science Foundation, the ESF.
Recalling that 2004 would be an election year, Kastelan said this
would be an opportunity to select members of younger age who could
respond to an increasing number of challenges and tasks with which
the HAZU was being faced.
The secretary general said the average age of HAZU members was 73.5,
and only six (6), out of 150 regular members of this institution,
were younger under 60.
At last night's meeting Kastelan also presented a financial plan
for 2003. Thus, the institution will need some 61.5 million kuna
(nearly eight million euros) for its activities.
The HAZU will receive about 53.5 million kuna from the state budget,
it will ensure 1.2 million kuna through its activities, and
additional eight million kuna will be secured from other sources of
the financial assistance (ministries, counties other local
authorities and companies).
The plan was also unanimously approved by the participants in the
meeting.
