Gov't reduces fees for conversion of farmland

ZAGREB, April 21 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Thursday proposed draft amendments to the farmland legislation in order to simplify the procedure for the use of state-owned agricultural land and reduce fees for conversion of farmland.

Under the proposal, fees for the conversion of farmland into built-up areas will be cut from 50 to 5 percent of the market value of land and from 100 to 10 percent if the land is particularly valuable and if it is arable.

The draft act on social welfare was sent into second parliamentary reading.

The government considered a second report on efforts to meet benchmarks for the provisional closing of the policy area No. 23 "Judiciary and Fundamental Rights in Croatia's European Union accession negotiations.

The report outlines in detail what has been done over the last two weeks in this regard.

The government also decided to donate 1,500 rifles and 300 recoilless guns to Afghanistan as equipment to the Afghan security forces.

The justice ministry was tasked to submit a request to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia to grant the status of amicus curiae to Croatia in the case of Generals Gotovina, Markac and Cermak.

The government initiated procedure for concluding a bilateral agreement with Bosnia and Herzegovina in the defence cooperation sector.

The government also initiated a procedure aimed at concluding a bilateral agreement with Albania on police cooperation, according to a press release issued after the government's closed-door meeting.
