Violence is becoming an increasingly big a public health problem,
therefore priorities in the prevention of violence and its
consequences must be established, it was said at the meeting
attended by the health ministers of eight Stability Pact member
countries and representatives of the European WHO office.
Data from the WHO report show that in 2000, 815,000 people in the
world committed suicide and Croatia with 818 suicides is among
Europe's leading countries in the number of suicides.
Violence is particularly strong in countries undergoing serious
social and economic changes, particularly in central and eastern
Europe. In some countries the suicide rate increased by more than
150 percent between 1985 and 1994.
