ZAGREB UNIVERSITY SENATE AWARDS BADINTER HONORARY DOCTORATE

ZAGREB, March 12 (Hina) - The Zagreb University Senate on Wednesday decided to award a former chairman of the European Community's Arbitration Commission, Robert Badinter, an honorary doctorate. #L# Chancellor Helena Jasna Mencer said Badinter would be awarded the honorary doctorate at a ceremony in late April. A commission appointed by the University Senate decided that with his scientific and public actions Badinter had made an exceptional contribution to the legal culture, democracy and the protection of human rights, helping Croatia in its legally founded struggle for independence and defence against Greater-Serbian aspirations and its justified efforts to gain international recognition. Badinter thus gave a significant and particularly valuable contribution to the realisation of fundamental rights and freedoms of the Croatian people and Croatian citizens. (hina) sp rml sb
