LABOUR COMMITTEE SENDS CHANGES TO LABOUR ACT INTO FIRST READING

ZAGREB, Feb 28 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament's Committee on Labour, Social Policy and Health on Friday endorsed the government's draft changes to the Labour Act and forwarded them into the first reading. #L# Of the seven committee members who attended the session, five voted for the draft, while two Croatian Democratic Union deputies were against. The deputies agreed that holding an introductory parliamentary debate on the bill would take too much time and be detrimental to workers and the unemployed, and warned that along with adopting a new labour act, one should also adopt accompanying regulations from the labour legislation to increase the workers' social protection. The head of the government's Social Partnership Office, Vitomir Begovic, said that social partners had reached a high degree of agreement on the changes to the law and that conditions for reaching a compromise at a later stage of negotiations had been created. The leader of the Independent Croatian Unions, Zdenko Mucnjak, confirmed that the social partners were on the right track towards finding the best solutions, but voiced doubt about their having enough time between two parliamentary readings to harmonise their stands. Mucnjak believes that the most important problem for employers and investors is not the labour legislation but their legal insecurity, having to wait too long for permits, as well as the implementation of laws.
