ZAGREB, Feb 27 (Hina) - Representatives of Croatian cultural and
civil associations from Donji Lapac during talks with Croatian Bloc
(HB) MPs on Thursday warned of the violation of the constitutional,
religious and civil rights of Croats in Donji Lapac, the HB
reported. #L#
HB MPs promised to offer concrete support and to continue putting
pressure on the government so that their situation could be
resolved.
Representatives of the associations noted that they were in an
absurd situation in which, although the majority nation in Croatia,
they could not realise their fundamental rights and the person
responsible for this situation is the municipal head, Milan Djukic,
a Croatian Serb.
Djukic has embarked on public discrimination by not allowing Croats
to be employed in local government bodies or utility companies. He
legalised the eviction of Croatian cultural societies from
municipal premises and has banned prayer areas, which means that
Croatian families cannot even baptise their children, they said.
The most frightening repercussion of this situation is that in the
past two years, of the 1,100 Croats from Donji Lapac only 320 have
remained, they said.
