ZAGREB, Feb 20 (Hina) - The new law on Croatian Radio and Television

invitation will be made by parliament. #L#
The current 25-member HRT Council, which was appointed by
institutions and non-governmental organisations, will be replaced
by the 11-member Programme Council, which is to be nominated by
parliament based on a public invitation among institutions,
associations, and citizens.
The competition will be open between 15 and 30 days. Afterwards,
within 15 days of receiving the names of candidates, parliament
benches have to harmonise views on the list of candidates, which is
to be compiled by parliament's committee for information,
informatisation, and media. In case the benches fail to agree on all
11 names, parliament will choose the remaining ones by seeing there
is equal representation among those proposed by the parliamentary
majority and minority.
State officials, HRT employees and persons from competing
companies cannot be members of the Programme Council.
Culture Minister Antun Vujic has announced the whole process of
electing Programme Council members might be over by May, by which
time the current HRT Council will continue working.
After being appointed, the Programme Council has to invite
applications for the HRT manager and later, in agreement with
him/her, invite applications for the managers of radio,
television, and music production -- three HRT sectors with branch
status.
Besides appointing and relieving managers, the Programme Council,
at television and radio managers' proposals, will appoint the
directors and editors-in-chief of these two sectors' news
programmes.
Current managers and programme leaders on HRT will hold their
offices until new ones are appointed. Mirko Galic is the incumbent
HRT manager. His current assistants for radio and television, Vanja
Sutlic and Ivanka Lucev, are the temporary managers of Croatian
Radio and Croatian Television.
Current HRT editor-in-chief Jasna Ulaga Valic is now the temporary
HRT programme director and Dusko Radic the radio programme
director.
Current news programme editors on television and radio, Nikola
Kristic and Grgo Mrvica, are the temporary news programme editors-
in-chief on television and radio.
