The deputies also elected other governing bodies and decided to
organise a general convention of war veterans should their rights
continue to be threatened.
Speaking about the association's work last year, Decak said that
the association, which used to be called the Association of
Croatian Homeland War Veterans, had requested the Constitutional
Court to assess if the Law on the Rights of Croatian Homeland War
Soldiers was in line with the constitution as it believed that the
law violated the soldiers' material and procedural rights.
Decak resented the fact that the War Veterans' Ministry in June 2000
ceased to finance the work of the association's regional centres,
which he said had successfully provided psycho-social help to war
veterans.
Decak said that reviving those centres, of which some today are
financed by foreign donors, would help solve many issues, including
the problem of more than 32,000 soldiers being unemployed.
Today's conference was attended by War Veterans' Minister Ivica
Pancic, President Stjepan Mesic's advisor on military issues,
General Petar Stipetic, the army's chief inspector, General
Milivoj Petkovic, and other guests.
The Association is a member of a state co-ordinating body of
Homeland War associations and the World War Veterans Federation.
