ZAGREB, Feb 8 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on
Saturday he did not know whether the sale of Sisak Ironworks to
Russia's Mecelj company was a fraud and that "it is up to the
competent bodies to establish what is this about". #L#
The president said this at the celebration of the 20th anniversary
of the first bone marrow transplant in Croatia. The ceremony is held
under his auspices.
Reporters asked the president to comment on today's headlines in a
Croatian daily, which claims that the sale of Sisak Ironworks is a
fraud. Reporters insinuated that Mesic in a way had participated in
the alleged illegalities.
"I always advocate the opening of new jobs and if the Russians can
guarantee that Sisak Ironworks workers would keep their jobs and
that new be employed, I will always support it," Mesic said and
added it was not up to him to establish whether all that it had to be
done was indeed done.
