The Hungarian minister supported Croatia's plans to submit an
application for EU membership, voicing confidence that Croatia
could be among the countries to enter the EU in 2007.
Mesic said the candidacy would encourage reform processes in the
country, the completion of which was a condition for admission to
the EU.
Both officials said they were satisfied with the level of Croatian-
Hungarian relations, adding that they could be expanded,
especially in economy.
Mesic and Kovacs also discussed current international issues,
including the situation regarding Iraq.
During a meeting with Prime Minister Ivica Racan earlier in the day,
the Hungarian official said small and medium-sized companies from
Hungary were interested in investing in Croatia as was the oil
company MOL in the privatisation of the Croatian oil company INA. He
offered to acquaint Croatia with the experience Hungary had gained
during preparations and negotiations on admission to the EU.
Kovacs invited Racan to visit Hungary, which the premier accepted.
The Hungarian minister today also met Parliament President Zlatko
Tomcic.
