Banac was elected in the second round in which he beat his
predecessor Zlatko Kramaric by six votes, winning 250.
The third presidential candidate, Bozo Kovacevic, dropped out of
the race in the first round.
Vlado "Gotovac's party has stood on its feet and from today, changes
start in the LS, but also in Croatia," said Banac after being
elected.
"We will not let the HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) return to power
or allow the bipolar political division of the country between two
parties with an undemocratic tradition," he said.
The LS assembly also adopted a political declaration calling for
using the remainder of the coalition government's term to expedite
and improve the realisation of the more important promises given
before the 2000 polls.
Also adopted were declarations on local and regional self-
government and against discrimination because of sexual
orientation.
The LS today also elected a new secretary -- Karlo Gorinsek -- a new
presidency and other party bodies.
