Under a bill on preventing conflicts of interest in performing
public duties, officials would not be allowed to receive any other
wage or compensation, the exception being those employed in science
and culture.
The law is aimed at rehabilitating politics, Justice Minister
Ingrid Anticevic Marinovic said. According to her, the law is based
on legal, as well as moral standards. It is both a law and a code of
conduct, the minister said.
In keeping with the government's proposal, an official, when taking
and leaving office, must state his income scale, as well as at the
end of each calendar year he is in office.
Under the new law, officials could not be members of management or
supervising committees, nor would they be able to keep gifts whose
value exceeds 500 kuna (EUR66). In case they receive more expensive
gifts they would be required to inform a special commission, to be
appointed by parliament.
