By seeking a 45 percent pay increase the Croatian Doctors' Union is
in effect asking raising the average doctor's pay to 3.5 average
salaries in the state, the Ministry said.
Doctors employed in state and county hospitals can work after
regular working hours by using their hospitals' resources, thus
increasing their income, which is currently not included in their
average pay, the Ministry added.
Even though in European Union nations doctors' salaries are three
to five times as high as average ones, those countries earmark far
more money for the health sector than Croatia, which allocates
US$353 per capita annually.
In central and eastern Europe countries, which are closest to
Croatia in terms of funds given the health sector, the disparity
between doctors' and average pays is smaller.
Hungary sets $315 per capita annually and the average doctor's pay
is 600 euros -- 1.5 times more than the average wage.
The average doctor's pay in the Czech Republic is 720 euros -- 1.8
times the average salary, while $358 is allocated per capita
annually.
Poland sets $246 apart per capita annually and doctors make 475
euros on average -- 1.4 average pays.
As for Bulgaria, the average doctor's pay is 200-400 euros while the
country puts aside $59 per capita in terms of health. The average
doctor's salary there is 1.2-1.5 times an average one.
