ZAGREB, Dec 28 (Hina) - According to the latest reports, 40 Croatian citizens happened to be in South Asia at the time of Sunday's earthquake near Sumatra and 20 of them have contacted their families, an official of the Croatian Foreign Ministry told Hina on Tuesday.

"We know that 20 Croatian citizens are fine, and the other twenty who have not contacted their families yet are in Thailand, Sri Lanka and India. Those who are in India were most probably not caught in the disaster and may believe that there is no need to contact their families," said Vinko Ljubicic, in charge of Croatian diplomatic missions and consular offices.

The Croatian media have reported that a three-year child, the granddaughter of Zagreb University rector Helena Jasna Mencer, has gone missing in the tidal wave in Thailand, but Ljubicic could not confirm this.

The ministry is also following the case of Croatian engineer Ivan Roso, employed with a subcontractor of the Royal/Dutch Shell oil giant, who was kidnapped in the Niger Delta last Saturday by a militant group calling itself the "Iduwini Youths".

"Our ambassador to Cairo, Ivica Tomic, yesterday sent a diplomatic note to the Nigerian ambassador seeking assistance. He met him yesterday and will meet him again today," Zoran Pradic, a ministry official in charge of the case, told Hina.

Tomic has also contacted Shell and Seabulk, the company Roso works for, but has not received any information yet.

A Croatian representative will travel to Nigeria for negotiations on Roso's release if necessary, the official said.
