ZAGREB, Dec 22 (Hina) - The Croatian Government and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development signed on Wednesday a deed of donation to finance a project supporting the education sector.

The USD766,150 donation was granted by the Japanese Government.

The deed was signed by Croatian Finance Minister Ivan Suker and the chief of the World Bank's Croatian office, Albert Martinez.

Suker said the donation was intended to provide technical assistance to the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports in drawing up a project supporting the education sector. The project will be financed with a World Bank loan.

Suker said the loan was part of a new assistance strategy for Croatia over the next four years which the World Bank Board of Executive Directors approved on Tuesday. He added Croatia would be granted between USD1-1.5 billion as part of the strategy.

Science Minister Dragan Primorac said most of the funds from the donation would be used to analyse the teacher training reform.

Martinez said the donation would facilitate the restructuring and adjustment of Croatia's education system to European Union standards.

Japanese Ambassador Kaname Ikeda underlined the crucial role of the education sector in the development of the economy and society.

Today's deed of donation is the 30th Croatia has received through the World Bank since 1990 in the total amount of USD32 million. The Japanese Government has granted 20 donations so far.
