PULA, Dec 21 (Hina) - Danilo Ljubotina, the rector of the Serbian Orthodox Parish of Pula and Peroj in Istria, has been appointed at the proposal of the European Union as permanent representative of the Serbian Orthodox Church to the European Union in Brussels, the priest told reporters on Tuesday evening.

Ljubotina said he was the first representative of the Serbian Orthodox Church to be given a diplomatic mission to the European Union.

The EU recently sent an official proposal to the Serbian Orthodox Church to nominate its representative, and after two readings the Holy Synod approved a decision appointing Prior Ljubotina to the post.

"My mission as a church envoy to the European Union will be to represent the interests of the Serbian Orthodox Church. I am a citizen of the Republic of Croatia, so I will also try to help my country on the path to the EU and to speed up the process of European integration," Ljubotina said.

Ljubotina was born in Peroj, just outside the northern Adriatic resort town of Pula. He graduated from the Saint-Serge Institute of Theology in Paris and completed his postgraduate studies in Switzerland. He speaks several world languages.
