ZAGREB, Dec 21 (Hina) - Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany has expressed satisfaction with last week's decision of the European Council which decided to open EU membership talks with Croatia next March.

Prime Minister Gyurcsany has welcomed the fact that the European Council - against the British position, as he said - accepted the Hungarian position that Croatia's EU accession "should not be hindered", the BBC reported on Tuesday.

"There was no dispute between us on the accession of Croatia. In the current state of affairs, it is good to find points on which the Hungarian parliamentary opposition and the Hungarian government parties agree - word-by-word, essentially. The parties agreed that no new conditions should be for Croatia's admission. There were efforts of this kind, and I must say that it was even included in the document submitted to the Friday [17 December] meeting of the European Council," the Hungarian PM said addressing the national parliament on Monday evening.

"Hungary, together with the Visegrad Four [Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia] and in very close cooperation with Austria and Slovenia, against Great Britain, for example, represented the position that no, Croatia was not a country whose cooperation with Europe, whose European development could be questioned, it was not a country whose accession should be hindered. I am glad that the European Council accepted this position," the Hungarian PM was quoted by the BBC as saying.
