ZAGREB, Dec 12 (Hina) - Two Croatian army officers, Major Robert Glavina and Captain Karlo Pilka, on Sunday morning left Zagreb for Western Sahara where they will stay for the next 12 months as unarmed military observers of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

The two officers will replace Major Goran Karlovic and Lieutenant Hidajet Cobo. They will be overseeing the cease-fire between the forces of Morocco, which since 1975 has had administrative control of the former Spanish colony, and the Frente POLISARIO, which fights for the independence of Western Sahara.

The MINURSO was established in line with a UN Security Council decision in 1991 and its task is to oversee the implementation of peace agreements, separate the confronted sides and carry out preparations for the organisation of free elections under UN protection.
