Ministry spokesman Zlatko Mehun said in a statement the ministry believed Racan's letter was not ill-intentioned but the fruit of his being uninformed about police conduct. He said the accusations Racan mentioned in connection with police conduct in four cases were completely unfounded.
Racan's letter was distributed among the press earlier today. It accused the police of overstepping their authority, violating human rights, and reacting and sanctioning those responsible only after the media reported about the cases.
Mehun said, among other things, that the Interior Ministry had taken a series of steps to demonstrate its determination to combat all forms of crime, including within its ranks by pressing charges against current and former employees.
He added Minister Mlinaric would respond to Racan's "insinuations" with an open letter, providing "concrete and firm evidence".
