KOMIZA, Dec 6 (Hina) - President Stjepan Mesic has said that if and when Prime Minister Ivo Sanader dismisses Counterintelligence Agency (POA) chief Josko Podbevsek depends on how much importance he will attach to the material currently at his disposal.

Speaking to the press in the town of Komiza on the southern Adriatic island of Vis on Monday, Mesic said he gave Sanader some new evidence in connection with the "POA case" last week and expected the issue to be settled swiftly.

Mesic visited Komiza to attend festivities marking the Day of the Town and its patron saint, St. Nicholas. Mayor Vicko Mardesic presented Mesic with the town's coat of arms for everything he had done to promote Komiza.

Mesic spoke of the need to revive the islands through tourism, fisheries, and investing in free economic zones, urging the adoption of laws which would attract investment in high technology and exports.

The president said that people should not fear joining the European Union and that Croatia would benefit from EU membership, but he also underlined the need to protect the national heritage.

Mesic was also presented with a charter for sponsoring Croatia's participation at this year's world exhibition of ships in Brest, at which Komiza's traditional fishing boat known as Gajeta Falkusa was presented.

Those present were also addressed by Joao Galvao de Salvaho, director of the ship festival at the 1998 Lisbon World Exhibition, at which Gajeta Falkusa was first presented to the world.
