ZAGREB, Dec 6 (Hina) - Last week, Croatia attended for the first time as "an associate partner" the sitting of the Assembly of the Western European Union (WEU) in Paris, the Croatian parliament's vice president, Mato Arlovic, said in Zagreb on Monday.

"Croatia has become an associate member of WEU," said Arlovic, who led a Croatian delegation to the 50th WEU Assembly in Paris from 29 November to 1 December.

During the three-day sitting, the Croatian delegation took part in discussions on the development of parliamentary cooperation of Mediterranean countries and on the engagement od European forces in the Balkans as well as on new challenges in the trans-Atlantic cooperation, Arlovic added.

According to him, the Croatian delegation accepted a proposal for organising a meeting between Croatian parliamentarians and representatives of the WEU Assembly in Zagreb.

WEU, an alliance of the defence forces of European countries, was created by the Treaty on Economic, Social and Cultural Collaboration and Collective Self-Defence signed at Brussels on 17 March 1948 (the Brussels Treaty), as amended by the Protocol signed at Paris on 23 October 1954, which modified and completed it. The Brussels Treaty was signed by Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

The Union was officially set up in London in 1954. The WEU headquarters moved to Brussels in 1991. WEU is engaged in humanitarian and peace operations as well as in crisis management operations.
