Banac was awarded the title at the proposal of prominent citizens of Sarajevo, including former mayors, university professors and influential business people. He was presented with a charter declaring him honorary citizen by Mayor Muhidin Hamamdzic at a ceremony which was attended, among others, by Croatian Ambassador Josip Vrbosic.
