SANADER SAYS GOVERNMENT TO CALL PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS NEXT WEEK

SLAVONSKI BROD, Nov 23 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader hasannounced that the Government will call presidential elections nextweek.
SLAVONSKI BROD, Nov 23 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader has announced that the Government will call presidential elections next week.

Sanader made the announcement on Monday evening at a convention of his Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party in Slavonski Brod, about 200 kilometres east of Zagreb.

The HDZ vice-president and presidential candidate, Jadranka Kosor, said that she would begin her election campaign in Slavonski Brod in Constituency No. 5, which covers the counties of Brod-Posavina, Pozega-Slavonia and Vukovar-Srijem.

Addressing the convention, Sanader said that the stopping of foreign debt growth, a fall in unemployment, and export growth were significant economic successes achieved by the Government since it took office a year ago.

The Prime Minister reiterated the importance of Croatia's joining the European Union. "Croatia must never again find itself outside institutions that decide on European future, because that also concerns its own future," he said.

Kosor mentioned the steps that had been taken in order to improve the status of Croatian war veterans. "They have been given back their dignity, and with the new law that will go into force at the beginning of next year, they will also be given back their rights," she said.
