ZAGREB, Nov 17 (Hina) - The leaders of five opposition parties on Wednesday dismissed Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks' claim that their failure to attend a Parliament Presidency session should be interpreted in the context of upcoming debates on the draft 2005 national budget, the calling of presidential elections, and the case of Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul.

"We have no reason to be nervous, the (ruling) HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) has," said Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Ivica Racan.

He was speaking at a joint press conference called by the SDP, the Peasant Party (HSS), the People's Party (HNS), the Party of Rights (HSP), and Libra.

Racan declined to comment on the Government's position on Zuzul's conflict of interest case on the basis of information obtained from the media. He said the case raised the issue of moral and political responsibility.

HNS leader Vesna Pusic said it was absurd that the Government defended its foreign minister by claiming that there had been no criminal accountability. She added Parliament did not discuss officials' criminal but moral and political accountability.

HSS president Zlatko Tomcic concurred, saying it was not by accident that the formation of a Conflict of Interest Commission was being obstructed. He accused Seks of "shameless manoeuvreing" in connection with the appointment of the commission, saying he would like to see it set up as soon as possible so that he himself could be freed of conflict of interest allegations.

Miroslav Rozic of the HSP said it was necessary to wait for a parliamentary discussion on a vote of confidence in Zuzul to see what positions the clubs of deputies would take.

The press asked where the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) stood. Rozic said the IDS stood somewhere between the opposition and the ruling party, Tomcic said this was not the topic of the press conference, while Racan said he had no need to talk about the IDS. He did, however, say that he had tried to reach IDS vice president Damir Kajin but failed because Kajin was speaking to the press.
