DONJI LAPAC, Nov 8 (Hina) - President Stjepan Mesic said on Monday that parliamentary opposition parties had the right to demand resignation of Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul over his alleged involvement in a corruption scandal, but that he was also in favour of other "shady dealings" being investigated.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to Donji Lapac, about 150 km south of Zagreb, Mesic said he had nothing against business operations by former government minister Radimir Cacic of the People's Party (HNS) and former parliament speaker Zlatko Tomcic of the Peasant Party (HSS) being investigated.

"But it is not clear to me why some evidence is being kept in a drawer if it exists," Mesic said, adding that it was not good now to go into things that had happened before.

Responding to a journalist's question, the president said he had received no information about possible international implications of the Zuzul case that might harm Croatia.

Asked to comment on statements by Serb political leaders Milorad Pupovac and Vojislav Stanimirovic, that problems of Croats in areas devastated by war were being dealt with much faster than those of Serbs, Mesic said that the two were members of the Croatian Parliament fighting for their political goals.

"It is their right to demand that those problems be resolved, and in my opinion, the most important thing is that the government should encourage refugees to return and to create employment opportunities," Mesic said.
