THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Nov 15 (Hina) - Former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) Fatmir Limai, Isak Musliu and Haradin Bala went on trial before the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague on Monday for the alleged abuse and killings of Serbs and Albanians in a KLA-run camp in Kosovo in the late 1990s.

Prosecutor Andrew Caley read out the names of 22 Albanian and Serb civilians killed in the KLA camp in the village of Lapusnik near Malisevo from May to the end of July 1998.

The first defendant, Limai, 33, was regional KLA commander; Musliu, 33, commanded a KLA unit in charge of the camp; while Bala, 47, was a camp guard and is charged with the execution of ten prisoners during the evacuation of the camp on July 26, 1998.

All three are charged with involvement in a joint criminal enterprise the aim of which was intimidation, detention, violent treatment and murder of Serb civilians and Albanians considered to be Serb collaborators.

Limai and Musliu are also charged on the basis of individual and command responsibility with ten counts of crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war, while Bala is charged only on the basis of individual responsibility.

The prosecutor said that more Albanians than Serbs had been detained in the Lapusnik camp, as indicated by the number of Albanians killed there.

The indictment alleges that nine Serbs, one non-Albanian and two Albanians were killed in the camp, and that an additional 10 Albanians were killed on July 26, 1998.
