ZAGREB, Nov 12 (Hina) - Parliamentary deputies of the Libra party called on the Council for the Civilian Control of Security Services on Friday to demonstrate independence in its work or resign, so as to break the false impression of existence of civilian control of the intelligence system in Croatia.

Libra MPs Jozo Rados and Vilim Herman said at a press conference that the Council was completely blocked in its work by the parliamentary Home Policy and National Security Committee and its chairman, Ivan Jarnjak.

"Although the Council should be operating as an independent body within the Committee, it is completely blocked in its work by the Committee," Rados said.

Rados criticised the Council for failing to present its stance to the public on three recent scandals -- the monitoring of six journalists and former police director Ranko Ostojic and the treatment of journalist Helena Puljiz by the Counter-Intelligence Agency (POA).

Rados raised the question of whether journalists were an ongoing subject of interest to the POA.
